Small Group First Weeks

Back to School Time!

Well, it's that time of year again when the world seems bright, there is a glimmer in every teacher's eye, and parents cannot wait to send their little ones to school! Ha!

But seriously, I am anxiously awaiting my first year at a new school. I have been in and out of my new building several times over the last few weeks and I still have TONS to get done. I know I am not the only one feeling excited, so I thought I would blog some plans I have used in the past to foster teambuilding and classroom mangement during the first week of school:

  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------WELCOME BAGS FOR STUDENTS

Book: Reading classic novels helps build your vocabulary and makes you smart beyond your years!

Medal: You are all winners in my book! Let’s work together as a team this year!

Silly Straw: There’s always a time and a place to be silly---we will have a lot of fun this year!

Sunglasses: “Your future is so bright, you’ve gotta wear shades!”

Lifesavers: I am your support in and out of the classroom and so are the other adults in the building and your classmates. Never feel weird to ask for help!

Hugs:    If your feelings were hurt, you had a bad day, not feeling so well…remember there is always a hug waiting for you!

Whistle: You have worked so hard to get to the end of elementary school—don’t “blow it” now! Keep your behavior and attitude in check and this will be your best year yet!

Here are the before and after pics of what I have done so far in my NEW school classroom! I am still in the process of moving into my new school and getting all of the excess furniture out of the way, but this is what I did the first day I was able:

Read this book, spoke about spreading rumors, then had each student crinkle the heart to show how rumors, lies, and bullying hurts people's hearts. You can flatten out the crinkle, but it will always be there.

Teacher Business Card with QR code

Thanks to Mimi over at 5thGradeRocks5thGradeRules , I recreated my business cards on Publisher. I put my QR Code on them instead of clip art. I changed the color to go with our school colors and I love it!!!

MORE classroom set-up stuff

I start back to school on August 14th; have staff development the 14-17th. Open House is the 20th and my students start on the 22nd. TIME IS FLYING BY and there is seriously NOT enough time to get everything together in the time allotted....so this is why I ALWAYS go into my classroom in the summer and work as much as I can. There's always a ton of paperwork that needs to be completed before the first day of school. That is why I try to have my entire room done so I can have a clear head for the monotony that is --paperwork!

COMMON CORE MATH POSTERS

The above questions were taken from the 5th grade Common Core standards. I am going to print them out and place them next to my math word wall. I will refer to these while teaching and have them up all year for my students to use as well.

SIGN IN CARDS

The numbers are for my students. Every morning the students must flip their card over so the number is showing. This way, when I take attendance, I know who is in class that day. At the end of the day, on their way out the door, each student turns their number to the back--ready for the next day

Beginning of School

I created these labels for my classroom library.

I used this form a few years ago for classroom management.

This schedule is a rough schedule of what students will be learning the first month of school.

First Day of School presentation

In all my years of being in the classroom, the one thing that is a MUST is setting up classroom procedures. Without them...all the pretty posters, name tags, decorations...mean nothing! Children want to have fun, but truly need guidance and an understanding of their parameters.

A colleague of mine created a powerpoint about Chaos vs. Order ..that I of course spruced up for my classroom. It has been a lifesaver for years.
